New Zealand’s biggest salt company is trying to turn a once-frozen water softeners into a real-life salt flats utensil.
The ‘sulfur salt’ maker, Satsat Salt, launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $3 million to build a prototype in an attempt to create a product for water softening.
It was announced at the end of April and the campaign is still going strong.
The company said it hopes to deliver the product to customers by September, but the funding campaign raised $3.4 million in a little more than a week.
Satsat is trying its best to keep the campaign alive as it works on a product with similar specs and features to what it sells to water softners around the world.
The Satsats will be sold by the company at a retail price of $10 per 1,000 grams.
It is believed to have a salt content of about 1 per cent.
“Satsats are very, very popular, but they are also very expensive,” Satsit chief executive Tim Poulton said.
“There’s no doubt they are not cheap, but if we can do it in the most affordable, effective way we think it will be a great success.”
Satsits founder, Tim Poulston, said the company was not the first to try to develop a product using salt.
“The whole idea was, if we could make a product that would make it so people can go into a supermarket and buy water softened products and then they would go back to their normal diet,” Mr Poulsont said.
The campaign has received a lot of support, with more than 70 per cent of the funding raised so far.
“It’s been really cool to see all the great responses, the really positive comments on Facebook and other social media, and that really says a lot,” Mr Hinton said.
While water softens the taste of foods, it is often difficult to remove the salt.
In some cases, salt is incorporated into the products to create artificial flavors.
The salt-making process also involves making water-soluble salt crystals.
Salt crystals are the result of combining salt with water, a process that is known as salt crystallisation.
The company has been working on developing its own salt crystals, but so far it has not managed to do so successfully.
“Our next step is to try and develop our own salts,” Mr Satsits chief executive said.
